North Texas Students Visit Perot Field for Land Surveying and Geospatial Field Day

One hundred high school students recently had an exciting day at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport, diving headfirst into the fascinating world of land surveying and geospatial technology.

Hosted by the North Central Texas Aerial Robotics initiative, these students received a unique hands-on experience provided by Halff, KCI Technologies, Dallas and Tarrant Colleges, Gorrondona & Associates, McKim & Creed and Data Land Services.

Halff’s Bill Swope, Jib Ahmad and Russell Lestina attended the event, investing in these students for the day. “We had a great time discussing drone and lidar technology with the kids,” said Survey Technician Russell Lestina. “It was very fulling to see their faces and hear their questions. And it’s nice to see young kids that want to pursue a career in our industry.”

Their adventure included a tour of Alliance Aviation Services, where they witnessed the inner workings of an FBO organization while learning about career opportunities in customer service and line operations.

Sponsored by the Gulf South Region, this event is now in its third year as part of the NCTX Aerial Robotics initiative supported by InterLink. Students enrolled in drone and aviation programs across multiple ISDs received this chance to learn more about career paths in the industry and participate in real-world workforce experiences.

GSR members organize the event, while participating firms offer the students insights into career opportunities available.

Many student participants are already studying for their FAA Part 107 licenses.

The day wrapped up with everyone enjoying pizza in the hangar, and each school received two drones from the ASPRS Gulf South Region. (Talk about a cool takeaway!)

Students benefited from this enriching experience by obtaining a ton of new knowledge about the awesome careers in the geospatial and surveying industry.
